Metro to finish weekend switch replacement work at the Medical Center Metrorail station

Metrorail riders should build at least 30 minutes of travel time into their schedule while riding the Red Line this weekend as Metro will be completing a vital track work project at the Medical Center Metrorail station.

As part of its infrastructure renewal program to ensure safe and reliable transportation, Metro will continue its switch replacement project at the Medical Center Metrorail station this weekend from 9 p.m. on Friday, February 8, through midnight on Sunday, February 10.

This weekend, Metro will complete the switch replacement at the Medical Center Metrorail station. A switch or “interlocking” is an intersection in the track, where trains can “switch” from one track to another, depending on their destination and route.

Red Line weekend service pattern

O Red Line trains will operate between the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations, however, trains will share one track between the Friendship Heights and Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail stations.

O All Red Line trains will run every 15 minutes between the Friendship Heights and Glenmont Metrorail stations.

O Every other Red Line train traveling to the Shady Grove Metrorail station will terminate at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station and return to the Glenmont Metrorail station.

O Red Line trains will run every 30 minutes between the Friendship Heights and Shady Grove Metrorail stations, while sharing one track between the Friendship Heights and Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail stations.

O All Red Line trains will operate with six and eight cars. 

To alert customers about this work, station and train announcements will be made throughout the Metrorail system. Additional information will be available on Metro’s Web site at www.metroopensdoors.com.

Verizon Center events

On Friday, February 8, the Washington Capitals host the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m., on Saturday, February 9, Barry Manilow performs in concert at 8 p.m., and on Sunday, February 10, the Washington Capitals host the New York Rangers at 1 p.m.

Metro advises Red Line riders traveling between the Shady Grove and Friendship Heights Metrorail stations to add at least 30 minutes of travel time for their trips as it will take longer to get to and from downtown Washington.

The Trip Planner, located on Metro’s Web site, will not reflect the impact of this work on its schedules. Customers should allow more time for their trips because of this work. For more information on traveling by Metrobus or Metrorail, customers may call (202) 637-7000 or TTY (202) 638-3780.
