Metro ready for Wednesday sports tripleheader

Extra trains for fans after baseball, basketball, soccer games

Metro officials have pledged that extra trains will be available to get fans home from the baseball, basketball and soccer games being played in Washington, D.C., Wednesday night, April 9.

Wednesday evening will be crowded in the Metrorail system as sports fans head to the Nationals, Wizards and DC United games. The Washington Wizards play at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Center, the Washington Nationals play at 7:10 p.m. at Nationals Park and the DC United play in the CONCACAF Champions Soccer Cup at 7:30 p.m. at RFK Stadium.

Metro will operate normal afternoon rush hour service on all rail lines leading up to these events.

After the games, Metro will have up to 25 additional trains available system wide (a combination of six- and eight-car trains). Eight extra trains will be available to operate on the Yellow and Green lines, 11 extra trains will operate on the Orange and Blue lines and six extra trains will operate on the Red Line to help customers traveling from Gallery Pl-Chinatown, Navy Yard and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations.

Regular commuters who work near the Verizon Center are encouraged to use the other Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail station entrances at 9th and G Street, NW, and 7th and H Street, NW, or to use Judiciary Square station at 5th and F Street, NW, to avoid the crowds expected at the 7th and F Street entrance for the Wizards game.

Fans going to the Nationals game are reminded to use both entrances at Navy Yard Metrorail station on the Green Line. The station’s newly expanded west entrance at Half and M Street, SE, is one block from the Nationals Park. The station's east entrance is two blocks away at New Jersey Avenue, SE.

Fans headed to and from the DC United game are reminded to use both entrances at Stadium-Armory Metrorail Station. The main entrance, closest to RFK Stadium, is located at 19th Street between C and Burke streets, SE.

Metro will have additional station managers, rail supervisors and Transit Police at Gallery Pl-Chinatown, Navy Yard and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations to assist customers.

Upon entering the Metrorail system, all fans should purchase enough value on their farecards or SmarTrip cards for their round trip.
