Assessment of Metro Transit Police Department to help with long-term, strategic planning

The Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) will undergo a comprehensive assessment and develop a long-term plan to reduce crime in the Metro system, strengthen relationships with Metro passengers and employees, and enhance emergency preparedness measures.

Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn initiated the assessment when he began his job as chief in March and intends to complete the review this summer. The department will use the results of the review to evaluate current practices and procedures, develop performance measures and identify needs. By the end of the year, MTPD will create a five-year strategic plan to move the department forward. The Federal Transit Administration intends to assist MTPD with assessment and strategic planning.

“The Metro Transit Police Department is one of the most highly regarded transit policing agencies in the country. We’re committed to our customers and will continue to seek ways to improve the things we do and look for new ways to enhance public safety,” said Chief Taborn.

“This assessment and strategic plan will help us become a better police force. The process will leave us with a clearer vision for the future, help us identify and better manage the challenges we face, and optimize our operational efficiencies,” Chief Taborn said.
