District of Columbia to include SmarTrip® technology in identification cards

District of Columbia students and summer youth employment participants will have identification cards that double as SmarTrip® cards thanks to the Metro Board’s Finance, Administration and Oversight Committee approval of an agreement for the transit agency to participate in the District of Columbia’s One Card initiative.

The students’ SmarTrip® One Cards will grant them access to their schools and workplaces, and also serve as a SmarTrip® card, good for travel on Metrorail, Metrobus, in Metro-owned parking facilities, on the DC Circulator and other regional bus systems.

Under an agreement reached between Metro and the District of Columbia, the District of Columbia will expand its One Card program, which is designed to give District residents access to specified District of Columbia government facilities, resources and programs, and travel on Metro with a single card. District of Columbia library cards, parks and recreation ID cards, and someday even drivers’ licenses will feature SmarTrip® technology.

The back of the card will include the District flag and One Card logo, as well as the SmarTrip® logo and Metro “M.” The front of the card will look like any other government-issued ID card with name and photo.

To support the initiative Metro has collaborated on the card artwork, and will order, initialize and test the cards before handing them over to the District. The District of Columbia will administer the program, including issuing the SmarTrip® One Card to participants and reimbursing Metro for the cards.
