New parking garage opens at Huntington Metrorail station

A new parking garage at the Huntington Metrorail station on the Yellow Line in Alexandria, Va., is open for business. The expanded $31.1 million, six-level parking facility for 1,424 vehicles opened today after two years of construction.

The new garage replaces a 924-space surface lot and accommodates 500 more parking spaces. Parking is available for 3,558 vehicles at the rail station in three garages and two Kiss & Ride Lots.

“This new parking garage at Huntington will provide significant benefits to our customers who use the station every day, and it will help alleviate traffic congestion in the Huntington area,” said Jeff McKay, a member of Metro’s Board of Directors and Fairfax County Supervisor. Construction of the new parking structure on the east side of the Huntington Metrorail station on Huntington Avenue began in October 2006. It is part of a mixed-use development project, which includes residential, commercial and office space.

“This project will create a real quality mixed-use center that epitomizes the type of smart growth that we need around our transit stations,” McKay said.

In November 2002, Metro signed a joint agreement with Stout & Teague and Clark Realty Capital to develop a 60-acre parcel of land next to the Huntington Metrorail station near the intersection of Route 1 and the Capital Beltway. The proposal calls for mixed-use development, including 55 town homes, 420 low-rise multi-family units, 175 high-rise condominiums, 250,000 square feet of office space, 30,000 square feet of street-level retail and 12 acres for the Fairfax County Park Authority.

Funding for the new facility comes from Fairfax County Transportation Infrastructure Investment Funds, Fairfax County surcharge funds and Fairfax County capital funds.

Parking at Metro-operated parking lots is free on weekends and holidays. The weekday rate at the Huntington facility is $4.50. Riders also can take Metro and Fairfax Connector buses to the station.
