Bus, taxi collide

Taxi passenger dies

A Metrobus and a taxi van collided at about 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Virginia Ave. and 19th Street, NW, in the District of Columbia last night (Friday, September 26). The Metrobus operator, the taxi driver and all four passengers in the taxi van were taken to area hospitals. Unfortunately one passenger in the taxi died as a result of his injuries

The Metrobus, number 2041, which had no passengers on board, was returning to the Western Bus Division for the evening at the time of the accident. The bus was not on its usual route back to the garage, but was using an alternative route due to construction along the regular route.

The Metrobus operator is a rookie and has been employed with Metro since March. He was treated and released from a local hospital and he is currently on paid administrative leave until the accident investigation is complete.

The bus is being inspected as part of the investigation to determine if any mechanical failure may have contributed to the accident.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department.
