Rail replacement may slow Red Line trains

Ultrasonic testing to take place Oct. 20-21

Monday and Tuesday, October 20 and 21, Metrorail customers may experience minor delays if prescheduled overnight ultrasonic testing of the Red Line tracks identifies rails that have defects and need to be replaced.

If a defect is found, the rail will be fixed temporarily and a slower speed will be mandated for trains that pass the area. The flawed rail will be replaced the following night. The speed restrictions will cause minor delays as trains slow down to safely pass over the area of track that needs replacement.

Testing of the 106-mile rail system is conducted five times a year by a special train. The train rides the rails and uses ultrasonic testing to detect cracks or other flaws to identify any rails that must be replaced. In addition to the overnight testing, track inspectors also visually inspect the rails twice a week to ensure the reliability and safety of the rail system.
