Prohibition signs to be installed at all 86 Metrorail stations

Signs to be at Metrorail station entrances

New signs that alert Metrorail riders of prohibited items in the Metrorail system will be installed at all Metrorail stations by the end of the month.

The new signs, which have begun to be installed this week, are customized for each Metrorail station entrance. They address prohibited activities in the Metrorail system: no smoking; no eating and drinking; no animals (except service animals); no audio or video devices (without earphones); no littering or spitting; and no carrying of dangerous or flammable items into the system.

“These new prohibition signs will catch our rider’s attention the moment they approach a train station,” said Gerald C. Francis, Metro’s Deputy General Manager and Chief Operating Officer. “Our customers have been asking for new and improved signs in our stations and we believe these prohibition signs will make it clear that certain behaviors are prohibited.”

The signs carry the internationally understood symbols of a red circle with a slash through the prohibited behavior.

The installation of these new signs is part of a continuing effort to remind Metrorail riders the rules of riding the system. This summer, Metro installed temporary prohibition signs inside portable sign cases near Metrorail station kiosks.

The cost to fabricate and install these signs was $90,000.
