McPherson Square Metrorail station reopened

Trains sharing one track between Farragut West and Federal Triangle

Trains are sharing one track on the Orange and Blue Lines between Farragut West and Federal Triangle Metrorail station after a cable burned out in an ancillary room at the McPherson Square Metrorail station, causing smoke in the station. The incident closed the McPherson Square Metrorail station for about 35 minutes this morning, from 11:48 to 12:27 p.m. today, Monday, Feb. 2.

During the incident, there was no Blue/Orange Line service between McPherson Square and Metro Center, as trains turned back before reaching the smoke-filled area.

Customers can expect some delays on the Orange and Blue Lines until the track headed in the direction of the Maryland stations is able to return to service because that track is adjacent to the ancillary room. Until that time, trains will be taking turns sharing the same track.

Free shuttle buses also are moving people around the incident, but customers should please keep in mind that a full train can carry 800 to 1,000 people, but a full bus carries only about 50 people.
