Yellow and Blue Line Metrorail riders going into or out of Northern Virginia through the Pentagon will need to board shuttle buses throughout Presidents' Day Weekend
Track work will prevent trains from passing through the Pentagon Metrorail station
Weekend track work will cut off the Blue and Yellow Line Metrorail stations in Virginia from Washington, DC, throughout the Presidents’ Day weekend.
Metrorail riders in Virginia who are planning to ride the Blue or Yellow Lines will need to transfer to a free shuttle bus if they want to get north of the Pentagon City Metrorail station from 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 13, through closing, Monday, Feb. 16. Rail riders who want to get south of the Pentagon will need to do the same because Metro officials will be conducting intensive track maintenance work at the Pentagon Metrorail throughout the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend that will not allow trains to pass through the station. Regular service will resume when the Metrorail station opens on Tuesday morning, February 17.
This weekend, Metro will replace rail switches, fasteners and stud bolts at the Pentagon Metrorail station and will conduct preventive maintenance on the Yellow Line bridge over the Potomac River from 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 13, to closing, Monday, Feb. 16. A rail switch or “interlocking” is an intersection in the track where trains “switch” from one track to another. This work must be done to ensure quality service and safe operation through the Pentagon Metrorail station.
Commuters south of the Pentagon City Metrorail station should give themselves an additional hour of travel time on Monday, Feb. 16, to ensure appropriate connections to free shuttle bus service at the Pentagon City Metrorail station.
Presidents’ Day weekend service pattern:
The Pentagon Metrorail station will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, to closing, Monday, Feb. 16.
Metro will provide free shuttle bus service every five minutes between the Pentagon City (shuttle bus location on the southbound side of 12th and Hayes St., in front of Macy’s), Pentagon (shuttle bus location at the Pentagon Transit Center, upper level platform, U-7) and the L’Enfant Plaza (shuttle bus stop location, northbound at 7th St., and Maryland Ave SW) Metrorail stations starting at 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 13, to closing, Monday, Feb. 16.
Metro will provide free shuttle bus service every 10 minutes between the Pentagon City, Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery and Rosslyn Metrorail stations.
Beginning at 7 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 14, and continuing to closing, Monday, Feb. 16, all Metrobus service will be relocated from the Pentagon Transit Center to the Pentagon City Metrorail station. Regular Metrobus service will be located northbound on 12th and Hayes St.
The Blue Line will operate between the Franconia-Springfield and Pentagon City Metrorail stations, and between the Largo Town Center and Arlington Cemetery Metrorail stations. During the winter months, the Arlington Cemetery Metrorail station closes at 7 p.m.
The Yellow Line will only operate between the Huntington and Pentagon City Metrorail stations.
All Blue and Yellow line trains will operate every 12 minutes during the day on Saturday, Feb. 14, and Monday, Feb. 16. All Blue and Yellow line trains will operate every 15 minutes during the day on Sunday, Feb. 15. All Green Line, trains will operate every 8 minutes during the day from Saturday, Feb. 14, to Monday, Feb. 16.
To alert customers about this work, Metro has placed notices on station kiosks, and will make train and system announcements. Riders should visit Metro’s Web site at www.metroopensdoors.com to review service changes for this weekend and identify where they are traveling to and from to determine whether the trip will require the free shuttle bus service.
The Trip Planner, located on Metro’s Web site, will not reflect the impact of this work on its schedules. Customers should allow more time for their trips because of this work. For more information on traveling by Metrobus or Metrorail, customers may call (202) 637-7000 or TTY (202) 638-3780.
