SmarTrip® card exchange offered to senior citizens and disabled individuals

Three dates planned in April for free exchange

Senior citizens or disabled individuals who use a regular SmarTrip® card for travel on Metrorail and Metrobus may exchange their regular cards for a senior or reduced fare SmarTrip® card for free.

Customers will have three opportunities this month to trade their undamaged, regular SmarTrip® cards for the senior or reduced fare SmarTrip® card. Exchange events will take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 15 and 22 at Metro headquarters, 600 Fifth Street, NW, Washington.

Any value on a regular SmarTrip® card will be transferred to the senior or reduced fare SmarTrip® card.

Senior citizens aged 65 years or older and people with disabilities are eligible for a 50 percent discount off regular Metrobus or Metrorail fares. The senior or reduced fare SmarTrip® cards automatically deduct the half-price fare.

To get the special senior SmarTrip® card, riders must provide proper identification, such as valid driver’s license, government-issued photo ID or passport with date of birth. Individuals with disabilities must bring their Metro Disability ID cards or completed application for the Reduced Fare Program for People with Disabilities to obtain the reduced fare SmarTrip® card.

The April dates have been arranged for SmarTrip® card exchanges only. SmarTrip® cards, and other Metro passes and fares will not be sold at the exchange tables.
