Metro to open at 5 a.m. Saturday for Race for the Cure

Race participants on the Red and Orange lines should add 20 to 30 minutes to travel time due to weekend track maintenance

Metrorail will open at 5 a.m., two hours early, on Saturday, June 6, to accommodate runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators for the first-ever Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure. Due to track work on the Red and Orange lines, individuals using these lines should add 20 to 30 minutes to their travel schedule.

The race, held in downtown Washington, D.C., begins at 8 a.m. with several events prior to the start. All activities take place between 4th and 7th streets, NW, and between Madison and Jefferson avenues. The nearest stations are the Federal Center SW Metrorail station on the Orange and Blue lines, the Judiciary Square Metrorail station on the Red Line, Archives-Navy Mem’l-Penn Quarter Metrorail station on the Green and Yellow lines, and the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station on the Blue, Orange, Yellow and Green lines.

Metrorail riders should load enough money on their SmarTrip cards or farecards for their round trip in advance of the race or when they first enter the system.

The Smithsonian, Federal Center SW and Archives-Navy Mem’l-Penn Quarter Metrorail stations are expected to be among the busiest stations on race day, so riders should consider exiting or entering at other nearby, less crowded stations such as the Metro Center, Gallery Pl-Chinatown, L’Enfant Plaza or Union Station Metrorail stations.
