Cracked rail repaired on the Green Line, repairs continue on Red Line this afternoon

Customers can anticipate delays due to cracked rail at Grosvenor-Strathmore

A cracked rail discovered this afternoon near the West Hyattsville Metrorail station has been repaired and service is returning to normal while delays continue on the Red Line due to a cracked rail outside the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail station.

A cracked rail was discovered at 12:58 p.m. near the West Hyattsville Metrorail station in the direction of Greenbelt. While Metro track crews made repairs, Green Line trains shared one track between the Fort Totten and Prince George’s Plaza Metrorail stations.

A second cracked rail was discovered at 1:50 p.m., between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center Metrorail stations on the Red Line in the direction of Glenmont. While Metro crews make repairs, Red Line trains continue to share one track between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center Metrorail station. Riders may experience delays up to 30 minutes.

Due to the continuing June 22 accident investigation on the Red Line at Fort Totten, Metro advises customers to use free Metrobus shuttles between the Silver Spring, Fort Totten and Takoma Metrorail stations. Metro also will provide shuttle buses and its regular Metrobus routes 70/71 and 79 (Georgia Avenue) service from the Georgia Ave-Petworth and Silver Spring Metrorail stations. People can expect long waits for buses as a full Metrorail train often carries 100 people or more per car and a bus can only hold about 50 people at a time.
