Metro Board approves Red Line rehabilitation program

Rehabilitation includes new escalators at the Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom Metrorail stations

Metro' s Finance, Administration and Oversight committee today preliminarily approved the transit agency's first system infrastructure and rehabilitation program designed to cover all aspects of maintenance repairs throughout the Metrorail system.

The first maintenance program is scheduled for the Red Line between the Dupont Circle and Silver Spring Metrorail stations early next year. The rehabilitation program will be the first in a series of contracts for all five Metrorail lines as part of an overall system infrastructure renewal program.

“This type of work is vital to maintaining our rail system and keeping the system operating as safely as possible,” said Metro General Manager John Catoe, who noted that this work had been planned before the June 22 train collision.

The contract will include the installation of new escalators at the Dupont Circle South Metrorail station entrance as well as the installation of new escalators, a canopy and stairwell at the Foggy Bottom Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange Line. The Foggy Bottom work was added to the project because of its proximity to the Dupont Circle station and the need to replace the escalators at the station. Other work will include platform slab and tile replacement at the Shady Grove and Rockville Metrorail stations and track fastener replacement and new rail insulators between the Medical Center and Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail stations.

Other work to be performed includes projects such as traction power, automatic train control and communications upgrades, tunnel lighting replacement, tunnel ventilation and fire stand pipe rehabilitation, public address system upgrades, station wall repairs, air conditioning and ventilation equipment rehabilitation and replacement, lighting change-outs, and elevator and escalator rehabilitation.

The Metro Board will vote on the $177 million program at the July 16 Board of Directors meeting.
