Metro’ s Brookland West Entrance Will Be Closed This Weekend as Construction Starts on the Comprehensive Escalator Canopy Pilot Program

Shuttle Bus Service Will Be Available From the East Entrance to the West Entrance

This weekend (April 26th and April 27th), Metro’s Brookland West station entrance (closest to Catholic University) will be closed as construction personnel place a protective deck over the entrance in preparation for the installation of a new canopy. (If it rains, work will be performed the weekend of May 3, and 4, 2003). Metro will provide free shuttle bus service from Bus Bay A from the east entrance to the west entrance every 15 minutes on the hour during Metrorail service hours while the west entrance remains closed. To alert customers about this project, additional signage and regular station and train announcements will be made throughout the Metrorail system, and special messages will appear on the Passenger Information Display Signs (PIDS) located in all Metrorail stations. The Brookland West station entrance will re-open on April 28th and will remain open through May 25th so that Catholic University students, faculty and visitors will have better access to the campus during final exams and commencement ceremonies. However, construction activities will continue in the area adjacent to the station entrance. As part of the Comprehensive Escalator Canopy Pilot Program, canopies will be installed over the next three months at four Metrorail Stations: Brookland, L’Enfant Plaza, Medical Center and Virginia Square-GMU. Construction has already begun at the Virginia Square-GMU station and will soon begin at the L’Enfant Plaza and Medical Center stations. Construction of all canopies is expected to be completed by the end of July. The installation of these canopies is designed to protect its customers, preserve the exposed escalator system from weather elements, improve escalator reliability, and extend the life span of Metrorail station escalators.
