Seven Contemporary Sculptures on Temporary Display at the New Mt. Vernon Square-7th Street/Convention Center Metrorail Station

The Metro Board’s Operations Committee today endorsed a temporary exhibit of contemporary sculpture entitled, ’seven on Seven," in collaboration with the Washington Sculptors Group to be displayed at the Mt. Vernon Square-7th Street/Convention Center Metrorail station. The sculptures, created by local artists, will be displayed on the mezzanine level of the newly renovated station from June through September.

" The pieces that will be on display are compelling, fun, and add unexpected interest while traveling the Metrorail system" said Michael McBride, Manager of the MetroArts Program. " ’seven on Seven" features the work of seven very talented local sculptors. In addition, the newly renovated station is a good space for exhibiting large-scale artwork because of its generous scale and simplistic architecture."

The sculptures include work created in a variety of media including bronze, steel, and wood. The exhibition includes: " Hatteras Dune" by Rodney Carroll; " Eclipsareon II" by Rima Schulkind ; " Tetaheran Cap #16" by Chas Colburn; " Forest Wheel" by Brent Crothers; " Haiku" by Wendy Ross; " Hydra" by Drew Goerlitz; and ’sanctuary" by Edmond Hardy.

The Metro Board of Directors is expected to approve the installation of the exhibit at its monthly meeting on May 15. The Washington Sculptors Group provides a way for artists and the public to meet and exchange ideas and information about sculpture. It sponsors frequent juried exhibitions and monthly public programs, symposia, and social gatherings. The MetroArts Program commissions site-specific artwork for the Metrorail system, installing it in stations to enhance the travel experience of transit customers. MetroArts works with artists, community groups, jurisdictional arts councils, and local governments to install artwork that captures the spirit and vitality of neighborhoods served by the Metrorail system.
