Metro’s Medical Center station entrance will close early next week as canopy installation continues over the entrance

Next week (June 11th and June 12th), Metro’s Medical Center station entrance on the Red Line will close early at 10 p.m. as personnel construct a protective deck over the station entrance in preparation for the installation of a new canopy. Customers wishing to enter and exit the Medical Center Metro station may continue to use the street elevator for access to the station.

To alert customers about this project, regular station and train announcements will be made throughout the Metrorail system.

As part of the Comprehensive Escalator Canopy Pilot Program, canopies are being constructed at four Metrorail Stations: Brookland-CUA, L’Enfant Plaza, Medical Center, and Virginia Square-GMU. Construction of all canopies is expected to be completed by the end of July.

The installation of these canopies is designed to protect its customers, preserve the exposed escalator system from weather elements, improve escalator reliability, and extend the life span of Metrorail station escalators.
