Metro’s Virginia Square-GMU station entrance will close early this week as canopy installation continues over the entrance

This week (June 17th to June 20th), Metro’s Virginia Square-GMU station entrance on the Orange Line will close early at 10 p.m. as personnel construct the permanent structure frame for the canopy to be installed over the station entrance. Customers wishing to enter and exit the Virginia Square-GMU Metro station may continue to use the street elevator for access to the station. To alert customers about this project, station announcements will be made throughout the Metrorail system. As part of the Comprehensive Escalator Canopy Pilot Program, canopies are being constructed at four Metrorail Stations: Brookland-CUA, L’Enfant Plaza, Medical Center, and Virginia Square-GMU. Construction of all canopies is expected to be completed by the end of July. The installation of these canopies is designed to protect its customers, preserve the exposed escalator system from weather elements, improve escalator reliability, and extend the life span of Metrorail station escalators.
