Metro named one of Region’s Best Workplaces for commuters for 2003

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) was named one of the Greater Washington DC Region’s Best Workplaces for Commuters, a new award that features regional employers committed to reducing traffic and air pollution and improving qualify of life for commuters. Seventy-six employers were placed on the first-ever regional list, compiled by the Greater Washington DC Region’s Best Workplaces for Commuters Coalition. Employers that make the list must meet a national standard of excellence for commuter benefits by offering employees benefits such as employer-provided transit passes, vanpool subsidies, preferred parking for carpools, bike lockers, compressed work schedules, and teleworking options. Metro offers its 10,000 employees transit passes for Metrorail and Metrobus, offers bike lockers and racks at its stations, and alternative work schedules and telecommuting. The award was created by the Greater Washington DC Region’s Best Workplaces for Commuters Coalition, a group of leading government and business organizations in the area working to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, cut emissions, and make commuting less stressful and costly for employers and employees.
