Robert J. Smith joins Metro Board

Gaithersburg resident Robert J. Smith was sworn in as the Vice Chairman of the 12-member Board of Directors of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) today, a few weeks after being named by Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. to fill the seat vacated by Cleatus Barnett, who retired in June after serving for 32 years. Mr. Smith, 44, is an architect and practices with a partner in the firm Smith Colen Architects in Gaithersburg, founded in 1987. He has designed strip malls, small office buildings, and other retail buildings. A Republican who has been active in his community, Mr. Smith has previously sought election to the Maryland House of Delegates in the 39th District, and is happy to have the opportunity to serve government in this appointed capacity. "With two decades of experience as an architect, Bob understands transportation policy, density, and development," said Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. "Bob is someone who knows the challenges of serving in a position like the WMATA Board and how it can affect the quality of life of so many people. He knows that we have to grow in appropriate ways and thoughtful ways." Mr. Smith will become chairman of the Metro Board in 2004 under a rotation policy that will see a Maryland member lead the Board of Directors. "I am extremely excited at the opportunity to participate in transportation planning and policy for the Washington Metro area. There is no issue of greater importance to the future success of the region," Mr. Smith said. Mr. Smith earned his bachelor of science degree in architecture from The Catholic University of America in 1981 and his bachelor of architecture degree in 1986. He is married and has four children.
