Metro announces weekend rehabilitation track work

Work to affect customers who use the Orange Line between West Falls Church-VT/UVA and Vienna/Fairfax-GMU

This weekend, as part of its Infrastructure Renewal Program to ensure reliable transportation, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) will conduct a major track rehabilitation project. To minimize customer inconvenience, this rehabilitation project will occur this weekend. Orange Line customers using Metro this weekend are advised to plan accordingly. The major rehabilitation project is as follows:

West Falls Church-VT/UVA - Switch Replacement When: Friday, October 17, 10 p.m., to Sunday, October 19, midnight.

Metro personnel will replace two switch components outside of the West Falls Church Metrorail station on the Orange Line. A switch or ’interlocking’ is an intersection in the track, where trains can "switch" from one track to another, depending on their destination and route.

To perform this work, Metro will single track trains - operate trains traveling in opposite directions alternately on the same track. On this portion of the Orange Line, Metro will single track trains between West Falls Church-VT/UVA and Vienna/ Fairfax-GMU.

The following service patterns will be in effect this weekend:

" Through the single track area between West Falls Church-VT/UVA and Vienna/Fairfax-GMU, all Orange Line trains will run approximately every 24 minutes on Saturday, and every 30 minutes on Sunday. " Every other Orange Line train will terminate at West Falls Church-VT/UVA and return back to New Carrollton.

" Orange Line trains will operate on their normal weekend schedules (every 12 minutes on Saturday, and every 15 minutes on Sunday) between New Carrollton and West Falls Church-VT/UVA. To alert customers about these rehabilitation projects, regular station and train announcements will be made throughout the Metrorail system. Additional information will be available on Metro’s Web site at www.metroopensdoors.com. The Ride Guide, located on Metro’s Web site, will not reflect the impact of this work on its schedules. Customers should allow more time for their trips because of this work. For more information on traveling by Metrobus or Metrorail, customers may call (202) 637-7000 or TTY (202) 638-3780.
