Two community briefings set on proposed K Street busway

Two community briefings have been set to allow local transportation officials to share plans for the proposed K Street Busway" a high capacity, high-performance transit system linking Union Station with Georgetown via K Street" with the community that the proposed Busway will serve. The briefings will allow individuals who are interested in the project to ask questions, discuss ideas with the project team, and learn more about the Busway concept. The meetings have been set for Monday, December 8, starting at 8:30 a.m. (open house starts at 8 a.m.) in the Great Hall-Room 301 at The Charles Sumner School, 1201 17th Street, NW, and on Thursday, December 11, at 7 p.m. (open house starts at 6 p.m.) at Francis Jr. High School, 2425 N Street, NW (corner of 24th and N Streets, NW). The meetings are hosted by the District of Columbia’s Department of Transportation and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro). The proposal calls for the reconstruction of K Street through the central core of Washington, DC, creating an exclusive Busway in the street median. In addition, pedestrian and traffic operations improvements are planned for the corridor including areas west of Washington Circle to Georgetown and east of Mt. Vernon to Union Station. The principal bus service planned for the facility will include the new Downtown Circulator. Phase I of the Downtown Circulator will consist of a crosstown high-capacity, high-performance service connecting Union Station, the Washington Convention Center, and Georgetown via the K Street Busway. The service would operate throughout the day with a high level of frequency and would use specially designed low-floor buses to maximize operations and passenger convenience.
