Metro News Release

For immediate release: May 20, 2004

Metro token sales limited to 20 per purchase

Sales of Metrobus tokens will be limited to a maximum of two bags (20 tokens) per customer transaction beginning Monday, May 24. The tokens, which cost $1.20 each, are accepted by Metrobus fareboxes and cover the cost of one full fare. Metro officials believe, as was the case preceding last year’s fare increase, that many customers are purchasing tokens in large quantities in anticipation of Metro fares increasing on June 28. The Metro Board is currently considering a five-cent fare increase for Metrobus, which would raise the fare from $1.20 to $1.25. Restricting sales to 20 tokens per transaction is necessary to lessen the possibility of exhausting Metro’s token supply between now and the start of the new fiscal year, which begins the week of June 28.
