Metrorail offers extended rush hour service Wednesday and shuttle buses late Wednesday and Thursday nights to allow mourners to pay respects to former President Reagan

Metrobus, MetroAccess service also impacted by funeral

Rush hour peak Metrorail service began today at 1 p.m. and will stay in place until at least 7 p.m. or later when crowd levels subside to move the larger-than-expected ridership this afternoon. Peak hour fares will be in effect only from 3 to 7 p.m., the usual hours when peak fares are charged. Peak hour service means that six-car trains, instead of four-car trains will be operating at more frequent intervals than non-peak hours. Trains will arrive at stations every three to five minutes instead of every six to eight minutes, on average. Metrorail service will end tonight at the regular scheduled time of midnight. Customers should check " last train" departure times and plan their trip accordingly. Metro will provide free shuttle bus service from RFK Stadium Lot Three at 19th and East Capitol Streets, NE, (at the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station) to the U.S. Capitol tonight and Thursday night (June 10) from 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Shuttle bus passengers will be dropped off at 7th Street and Madison Drive, NW, on the National Mall. Pick-ups will be at First Street and Constitution Avenue, NE. The shuttle bus service is expected to cost Metro approximately $3,000. Officials do not know how many people will take advantage of the additional service. Due to the events marking the remembrance of former President Ronald Reagan, the District of Columbia will have several street closures over the next three days. Please call Metro’s Customer Information phone line 202-637-7000 or visit www.metroopensdoors.com regarding Metrobus detours. In addition to Constitution Avenue being closed from Memorial Bridge to the Capitol, several other nearby feeder roads will also be closed, requiring 32 Metrobus routes to be detoured around the area of the road closures. Metrobus routes that will be impacted today include the following:" Potomac Park-Constitution Avenue, 17th Street, 18th Street: Routes13A, 13B, 13F, 13 G, 80, H1, L1, N3, P1, S1, XI;" Federal Triangle - 14th Street: Routes11Y, 16Y, 52, 563, 66, 68, P1, P2, P6, S2 and S4;" Archives-7th Street: Routes 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, 54, 70, P17, P19, and W13. On Friday, June 11, the casket will be moved from the U.S. Capitol at 10:45 a.m. to Washington National Cathedral for the 11:30 a.m. national funeral service. Road closures associated with the moving of the casket to the Cathedral may also result in brief delays for Metrobuses. Metrorail service will not be impacted and is scheduled to operate on its normal schedule. The body of the former President is scheduled to arrive in downtown Washington, DC, across from The White House late this afternoon in the formal funeral procession to the U.S. Capitol along Constitution Avenue. Large crowds are expected to line the processional route, and Metro is supplying approximately one dozen air conditioned buses along the route to assist individuals who may become overcome by the heat. The week’s events will also impact MetroAccess. MetroAccess customers with a subscription to take a regular Friday trip will have to call to schedule them, due to the national Day of Mourning as Ronald Reagan’s body will lie in state. Because Friday is considered as a national holiday for the observance of the death of the former President, MetroAccess service automatically cancels all regular subscription trips for that day, instead customers are required to call MetroAccess at 301-562-5360 if they wish to schedule a trip for Friday. To honor the former President, Metro officials yesterday draped black bunting along a portion of the mezzanine at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metrorail Station in Arlington. The station, which serves both the Blue and Yellow Lines, was renamed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metrorail station in 2002.
