Metrorail offers extended rush hour service today and Friday to accommodate people paying respects to President Reagan

Late-night free shuttle buses from RFK Stadium to Capitol continue

Rush hour peak Metrorail service will be provided today from 1 p.m. until at least 7 p.m. and through the afternoon tomorrow until crowds lighten in the late afternoon/evening to move the larger-than-expected ridership expected as a result of the public visiting the U.S. Capitol to view President Reagan as he lies in state at the U.S. Captiol. Peak hour fares will be in effect only from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., the usual hours when peak fares are charged. The same early 1 p.m. rush hour service was provided yesterday, June 9. Peak hour service means that six-car trains, instead of four-car trains will be operating at more frequent intervals than non-peak hours. Trains will arrive at stations every three to five minutes instead of every six to eight minutes, on average. Metrorail service will end tonight at the regular scheduled time of midnight. Customers should check " last train" departure times and plan their trip accordingly. Metro will continue to provide free shuttle bus service from RFK Stadium Lot Three at 19th and East Capitol Streets, NE, (at the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station) to the U.S. Capitol tonight from 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Shuttle bus passengers will be dropped off at 7th Street and Madison Drive, NW, on the National Mall. Pick-ups will be at First Street and Constitution Avenue, NE. The free shuttle bus service, which was also offered last night, saw 1,760 customers make the trip from RFK Stadium to the Capitol and 1,841 make the return trip during its first night of operation. Metro officials actually extended the free shuttle bus service for about an hour to accommodate stragglers. On Friday, June 11, the casket will be moved from the U.S. Capitol at 10:30 a.m. to Washington National Cathedral for the 11:30 a.m. national funeral service. Road closures associated with the moving of the casket to the Cathedral may also result in brief delays for Metrobuses. Metrorail service will not be impacted and is scheduled to operate on its normal schedule. Friday’s will also impact MetroAccess. MetroAccess customers with a subscription to take a regular Friday trip will have to call to schedule them, due to the national Day of Mourning as Ronald Reagan’s body will lie in state. Because Friday is considered as a National Day of Mourning for the observance of the death of the former President, MetroAccess service automatically canceled all regular subscription trips for that day, instead customers are required to call MetroAccess at 301-562-5360 if they wish to schedule a trip for Friday. To honor the former President, Metro officials earlier this week draped black bunting along a portion of the mezzanine at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metrorail Station in Arlington. The station, which serves both the Blue and Yellow Lines, was renamed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metrorail station in 2002.
