District director of emergency management agencyto speak at Metro

Barbara Childs-Pair, Director of the District of Columbia Emergency Management Agency, will be the keynote speaker at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at the spring meeting of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), held at Metro Headquarters, 600 Fifth Street, NW, Washington, DC. Ms. Childs-Pair began her career in 1973 with the Office of Civil Defense, now the DC Emergency Management Agency, as a clerk typist. During the past 30 years she has held several positions with the Agency, including administrative aide, chief of plans and training, chief of operations, and deputy director of operations. She served as deputy director of the agency from 1995 to 1999 and again from 2000 to 2003. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Ms. Childs-Pair assisted with the development of the District Response Plan, which reflects the functional aspects of the Federal Response Plan and ensures coordination and communications within the District government, as well as with numerous federal agencies, schools, universities, businesses and the community. The local chapter of COMTO will hold its business meeting at noon followed by Ms. Childs-Pair’s remarks at 1 p.m. Founded in 1971, COMTO works to strengthen the position of minorities within the transportation industry.
