Shuttle bus service established during elevator upgrade at Metro Center Metrorail station

Work expected to take 10 weeks

A complete modernization of both platform-to-mezzanine elevators at the Metro Center Metrorail station will begin on Tuesday, September 7, and will be completed by Tuesday, November 16, during which time the elevators will be out of service. A temporary shuttle bus is available for customers who request it. Those customers who normally enter or exit at the Metro Center Metrorail station should contact the station manager via the street elevator intercom and request shuttle service. Customers exiting at Metro Center should notify the station manager upon entry to request shuttle service. The shuttle bus will meet customers at the Federal Triangle Metrorail station (Orange and Blue Lines) or the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail station (Red, Yellow and Green Lines) to pick them up and take them to Metro Center. The bus is stationed in the area to accommodate these customers. The elevators at Metro Center are 28-years-old. The modernization process is almost the equivalent to installing a new elevator since most of the components that are being replaced. A complete overhaul or modernization of the elevator includes the replacement of all of the critical parts that make an elevator function including the elevator cab itself, the piston, the doors and the control panel. A modernization improves elevator reliability and extends the usable life of an elevator by approximately 30 years.
