Metro Announces Street Closures in Preparation for This Weekend’s Partial Shutdown of the Red Line

Street Closures to Support the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail Station Project

Starting tomorrow, Thursday, October 7, at 10 a.m., and continuing through Sunday, October 11, at midnight, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) in conjunction with the District of Columbia Department of Transportation will shut down K Street, N.E., between 1st and 2nd Streets, N.E., to allow Metro personnel to pre-assemble the new double crossover track for installation this coming weekend.

As a result of the road closure, a one block stretch of K Street, N.E., between 1st and 2nd Street, the following detour has been established:

  • Eastbound traffic will make a left onto 1st Street; a right onto L Street; a right onto 2nd Street; then a left back to K Street.
  • Westbound traffic will make a right onto 2nd Street; a left onto L Street; a left onto 1st Street; then a right back to K Street.

Over the three-day Columbus Day holiday weekend, personnel will install the new double crossover, (rail switch) between Union Station and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail station. This double crossover is the portion of track that allows trains to switch from one track to another if there is a service delay or emergency. Due to this work, a portion of the Red Line will be shut down between Union Station and Fort Totten, from Friday, October 8, at 8 p.m., through Tuesday, October 12, at 5 a.m.
