Metro prepares for grand opening of the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail station

Newest station on the Red Line debuts in two days

Saturday, November 20th, will be a monumental day for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro), the city of Washington, D.C., and the region. That’s when Metro opens its newest Metrorail station to the public on the Red Line and at the same time, marks the first time a new station opens within the entire 103-mile Metrorail system, which first opened in March 1976. The new Metrorail station, New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U -- is located at 200 Florida Avenue, N.E. The station, located in Washington, D.C., is situated between Florida Avenue and M Street N.E., and is commonly referred to as an ’in-fill’station because it is located between two existing operational stations, Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue Metrorail stations. The new station will also be served by Metrobus routes 90, 92, 93, and X3. Eastbound bus service will stop at the entrance to the station at Florida Avenue, N.E., and westbound service will stop at 3rd Street N.E. The grand opening celebration at 10 a.m., will include one-way free rides from the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail station to any other Metrorail station, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication of the station. Expected dignitaries include D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams, Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, members of the Metro Board of Directors, Metro CEO and General Manager Richard A. White and a host of other officials and community leaders. Metro broke ground on the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail station, its 84th passenger rail station on December 16, 2000. The $103.7 million construction project is opening one month ahead of schedule. For further information on the grand opening, contact Metro’s Office of Media Relations at (202) 962-1051.
