Metro announces weekend single tracking

This weekend, Metro will conduct track rehabilitation projects on the Orange Line, and the Red Line. During this work period, customers’ trips will take 10-15 minutes longer than usual. Please note the following schedule for this weekend:

  • Red Line - On Saturday, December 4, from opening (7 a.m.) to 7 p.m., trains will share one track between Rhode Island Avenue and Judiciary Square. [To help expedite the flow of rail travel, all Red Line trains which normally operate between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Silver Spring, will terminate at Judiciary Square and return to Grosvenor-Strathmore.]
  • Orange Line - Starting on Friday, December 3, at 10 p.m., and continuing through Sunday, December 5, at closing (midnight), trains will share one track between Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and West Falls Church-VT/UVA. [To help expedite the flow of rail travel, every other Orange Line train operating to Vienna/Fairfax-GMU, will terminate at West Falls Church-VT/UVA and return to New Carrollton.]
To perform this work, Metro must single-track trains - operate trains traveling in opposite directions alternately on the same track. On the Red Line between Rhode Island Avenue and Judiciary Square, and the Orange Line between West Falls Church VT/UVA and Vienna/Fairfax-GMU, Metro personnel will perform routine track maintenance, and therefore, it will require personnel to be in key safety-sensitive areas of the rail system. For more information on traveling by Metrorail or Metrobus, customers may call (202) 637-7000, TTY at (202) 638-3780.
