Marion Barry joins Metro board

District of Columbia Councilman (Ward 8) and former DC Mayor Marion Barry has been appointed to the Board of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) as an alternate representative for the District of Columbia and was sworn in today. Mr. Barry, 69, replaces David Catania on the Metro Board. Mr. Barry moved to the District. in 1965, after becoming the first chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He has lived in the city ever since, winning a seat as City Council Member in 1974, 1976, 1992, and most recently in 2004. During his more than 31 years as a D.C. City Council member, Mr. Barry was named the chairman of the Finance Committee. In this position, Mr. Barry worked hard to reorder the city’s finances, cutting taxes for senior citizens and offering property tax legislation.

In 1978, Mr. Barry became the second Mayor ever elected in D.C. He served as Mayor for three terms, from 1978 to 1990, and was reelected in 1994.
