T. Dana Kauffman elected chairman of Metro’s Board of Directors

T. Dana Kauffman has been elected to serve a year-long term as Chairman of the Board of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) effective immediately. Mr. Kauffman, a Board member representing Fairfax County Virginia, succeeds Robert J. Smith, whose one-year term as chairman ended today. Mr. Smith remains on the Board of Directors as a Maryland representative.

Mr. Kauffman, who served as the Board’s First Vice Chairperson last year, has served on the WMATA Board since January 1996. He became the principal member representing Fairfax County, VA, in January 2001, and was an alternate member from 1996 to 2000. He has served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors since January 1996.

Mr. Kauffman was Chief of Staff for former Lee District Supervisor Joseph Alexander, from 1982 to 1989, and Vice President for commercial and residential operations for A.J. Dwoskin & Associates, Inc., a property management firm in Fairfax, VA, from 1990 to 1995.

Mr. Kauffman serves on a number of regional agencies, committees, and subcommittees focusing on regional transportation and redevelopment and has been recognized by the Virginia Transit Association for "Outstanding Contribution by a Public Official." In addition to the I-95/395/495 Congestion Management Subcommittee, he also serves on the Intergovernmental Boards and Committees; the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC); Virginia Railway Express as a principal member; the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) Board of Directors; and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government (COG) Air Quality Committee.

Mr. Kauffman received a master of public administration degree from George Mason University in 1982, and a bachelor of science from George Mason University in 1979. He was also awarded the Wayne F. Anderson Alumni Award for distinguished public service.

Also today, Gladys Mack, a District of Columbia representative of the Board of Directors, was elected First Vice Chairperson and Charles Deegan, a Maryland representative of the Board, was elected Second Vice Chairperson. ###
