Metro to begin its comprehensive escalator canopy program

Construction of a new canopy to begin at stadium armory north metrorail station

Starting this month, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) will begin construction on the installation of a canopy over the north entrance of the Stadium Armory Metrorail station. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of March. A canopy will be installed over the south entrance as well. Construction at that entrance will begin the middle of this month and will be completed by mid-April.

As part of the construction process, temporary overhead protection made of steel beams and wood decking will be installed over the entrance at each station that will have a canopy. The actual construction will take place on top of the temporary decking. This will enable the station entrance to remain open during construction. Both Metro and the contractor have implemented a noise abatement program to minimize construction noise to nearby communities.

"Throughout the year, construction will occur on this very important project that relates to our escalators," stated Jim Gallagher, Metro’s Deputy General Manager for Operations. "The installation of these canopies is designed to protect our customers, preserve our escalator system from weather elements, improve escalator reliability, help reduce the number of escalator-related injuries and extend the life span of Metrorail station escalators."

Under the comprehensive escalator canopy program, canopies will be installed at the following stations in 2005: White Flint, Stadium Armory, Capitol Heights, Benning Road, Dupont Circle South, Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan, Cleveland Park, Van Ness-UDC, Friendship Heights, Waterfront, Shaw-Howard U, U Street/African Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo, Grosvenor-Strathmore, College Park West, Smithsonian North, Crystal City, Pentagon City, and Navy Yard East.
