Metro announces King Street station weekend track work over the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend

Track work to support King Street station enhancement program

As part of the station enhancement project at the King Street Metrorail station on the Blue and Yellow Lines, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) will conduct a major track project over the President’s Day holiday weekend requiring trains to share one track through the station. Customers are advised to plan accordingly next weekend.

The schedule for next weekend’s work is:

King Street Station Enhancement - Cable Installation

When: Friday, February 18, 10 p.m., through Monday, February 21, midnight.

Over the President’s Day weekend, Blue Line trains will share one track between Van Dorn Street and Braddock Road. Yellow Line trains will share one track between Huntington and Braddock Road. As a result of this work, customers are encouraged to add an extra 10 to 15 minutes of travel time between these locations.

The King Street station enhancement program, which will take place over the course of the year, will feature the expansion of the station mezzanine; a new elevated walkway to be constructed across Commonwealth Avenue at the intersection of Cameron Street; two new elevators; a stairway to provide access to the elevated walkway; a new canopy, similar to the present canopy above the station platform that will go over the uncovered portion of the platform; a new station kiosk; and additional farecard machines.

Metro would like to advise customers that as a result of the enhancement program, trains will periodically share one track through the station on late week nights, and on some weekends. Metro will update its customers on future track projects at King Street.
