MetroAccess out-of-area fee to take effect May 9

MetroAccess customers who travel to or from an origin or destination that is outside the 3/4-mile service area will be charged a supplemental fare beginning May 9. The supplemental fare is $1 per zone in addition to the base $2.50 MetroAccess fare. The maximum one-way fare will not exceed $6.50.

MetroAccess, Metro’s paratransit curb-to-curb service, is offered to customers as mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prescribes that the paratransit service needs only to be provided to within 3/4 of a mile of a preset bus stop or Metrorail station.

The Metro Board voted last June to implement the supplemental fares this fiscal year. It is expected to affect only a few MetroAccess customers.

Customers who have a subscription service for regular trips will be contacted in advance if the supplemental fare applies to their subscription service. Additionally, when a customer calls to reserve a trip, he/she will be informed whether the trip is subject to the supplemental fare and if so, will be told the exact fare for the trip at the time the reservation is made.

The zones, distances and fares assessed for each zone are:

  • Zone 1: If a trip is 1 to 3 miles outside the MetroAccess 3/4-mile service area, the customer must pay an additional $1 each way.
  • Zone 2: If a trip is 4 to 6 miles outside the MetroAccess 3/4-mile service area, the customer must pay an additional $2 each way.
  • Zone 3: If a trip is 7 to 9 miles outside the MetroAccess 3/4-mile service area, the customer must pay an additional $3 each way.
  • Zone 4: If a trip is 10 to 12 miles outside the MetroAccess 3/4-mile service area, the customer must pay an additional $4 each way.

MetroAccess customers can call 301-562-5360 if they have questions about the fares for their trips.
