Metro to host public hearing tonight On proposed expansion Of parking fees at the Largo Town Center and Morgan Boulevard Metrorail Stations During Events At FedEx Field for Non-Metrorail Riders

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) will host a public hearing tonight at 7 p.m., at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex Town Hall Room, located at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover, Md., to discuss a parking surcharge for non-Metrorail riders who park at the Morgan Boulevard and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations to attend events at FedEx Field.

During events at FedEx Field, people can park without charge on weekends in Metro parking lots. Patrons attending events at FedEx field are charged $25 to park at the stadium and facilities adjacent to the stadium.

Metro is proposing to require patrons who park at the Morgan Boulevard or Largo Town Center Metrorail stations during weekend events at FedEx Field to use a SmarTrip card to exit during events because the SmarTrip card allows Metro to charge rail customers using the station for transit, to park and pay the regular parking rate (on weekdays) or no rate (on weekends). Non-Metrorail riders would be charged the premium parking fee for parking at each of these facilities. The non-Metrorail rider fee would be in place three hours prior to event time and remain in effect until two hours after the event. This fee would ensure that a premium market-based parking fee would be charged to patrons attending these events.

Charging a market-based parking fee at these stations will also generate revenue that will assist on off-setting the operational costs incurred by Metro in security and cleaning of these stations.

Written statements and exhibits may be submitted until close of business on Monday, May 2, 2005 to Mr. Harold Bartlett, Acting Board Secretary, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, 600 Fifth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001. Patrons may send an e-mail to public-hearing-testimoney@wmata.com. Please reference the hearing and/or docket number (Hearing No. 518, Docket No. B05-3) in the submission.
