Metro drafts policy on Segways

Riders could bring Segways into the Metrorail system, but not on buses, under a policy being drafted by transit agency officials.

The upright motorized wheeled devices travel at speeds up to 12.5 miles per hour.

The policy on Segways would be similar to the use of bicycles in the subway system. They must be walked, not ridden; used in an elevator, not on escalators and not in the system during peak hours. Disabled riders would be exempt from the policy, provided they are registered to use the devices by the agency. A registration program is still being developed, but it will likely require medical documentation that the person needs to use a Segway as a mobility device, Metro officials said.

Unlike bicycles, Segways will not be allowed on Metrobuses. They can not be stabilized on a bus lift and can’t be secured inside a bus.

The policy is expected to be effective in August after the Board decides to change our regulations in June to allow the Segways in the system," said Jim Hughes, Acting Deputy General Manager of Operations.

The issue was raised during a Town Hall meeting with customers in April. Two more Town Hall meetings are scheduled for this year: September 13 in Maryland and November 9 in D.C.
