Improved and expanded New Carrollton rail yard and shop facility will be ready in January

Metro will open an improved rail yard, and expanded shop and inspection (S&I) facility at the New Carrollton Rail Yard in January 2006.

The improvements and expansion at New Carrollton is a top priority for Metrorail as ridership continues to grow and its fleet of rail cars increases. The upgraded New Carrollton rail yard will include a new 20-rail car S&I shop, expanded loop tracks at the north end of the shop and a new storm water management pond. Work on the project began early last year. With the first 62 new 6000 series cars expected later this year, Metro recognized the need for additional rail car maintenance spaces. Metro has 184 of the 6000 series cars on order. The 20 new maintenance spaces at the New Carrollton yard will greatly improve maintenance capacity on the Orange Line.

The total cost of the New Carrollton yard expansion and improvement project is $70.4 million.
