ATMs installed in Metrorail stations

Customers will be able to grab some quick cash at select Metrorail stations beginning this month, as Metro and Chevy Chase Bank has begun to install automated teller machines (ATMs) throughout the Metrorail system.

The ATMs are the result of a partnership between the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) and Chevy Chase Bank. Metro plans to use the revenue generated from the ATMs to buy bomb resistant trash cans for Metrorail station platforms to reduce trash in the system and to establish a remote monitoring system for the Passenger Information Display (PIDs) monitors so that out-of-service or malfunctioning PIDs can be fixed right away.

"Our customers have been asking for ATMs for a long time and we’re excited to partner with Chevy Chase Bank to provide customers with access to ATMs in the Metrorail system," said Leona Agouridis, Metro’s assistant general manager for customer communications. "We hope the in-station ATMs make life a little easier for customers by giving them the convenience of getting cash or account information when entering or leaving Metro."

The first ATM was activated Monday at the Bethesda Metrorail station. Additional ATMs will be in the Fort Totten, Greenbelt, Shady Grove and Friendship Heights stations this week or next. Chevy Chase Bank ATMs will be available for customers on all five Metrorail lines by the end of summer.

The Chevy Chase ATMs will be placed in the farecard purchase area of Metrorail stations and will dispense cash in multiples of $10s and $20s to make it easier for riders to purchase Metrorail farecards from fare vending machines.

"We are delighted to be partnering with Metro to offer Metrorail riders the convenience of ATM access in stations throughout the DC Metropolitan Area," said Scott McSween, Chevy Chase Bank’s executive vice president of retail banking. "Chevy Chase Bank has over 900 ATMs and nearly 250 branches throughout the region and we see the new in-station ATMs and our relationship with Metro as an extension of our efforts to offer the best possible service to our local community." Chevy Chase Bank ATMs will be installed in the following Metrorail stations: Ballston-MU, Bethesda, Branch Ave, Capitol South, Columbia Heights, Crystal City, Eastern Market, Farragut West, Federal Triangle, Foggy Bottom-GWU, Fort Totten, Franconia-Springfield, Friendship Heights, Greenbelt, King Street, Largo Town Center, New Carrollton, Pentagon, Pentagon City, Rosslyn, Shady Grove, Silver Spring, Suitland, Smithsonian and Vienna/Fairfax-GMU. Additional Chevy Chase Bank ATMs will be placed in select high traffic Metrorail stations in the fall.

The ATMs will be accessible when the Metrorail system is open: 5 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Thursdays; 5 a.m. to 3 a.m. Fridays; 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturdays; and 7 a.m. to midnight Sundays.
