Metro Board adopts Segway policy

Metro’s Board of Directors approved a policy Thursday allowing Segways on trains, but not buses.

The upright motorized wheeled devices travel at speeds up to 12.5 miles per hour and weigh up to 100 pounds.

The policy on Segways would be similar to the use of bicycles in the subway system. They must be walked, not ridden and used in elevators, not on escalators. Segways also are not allowed in the system Monday through Friday during peak hours (7-10 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.). They also are forbidden during large special events. Disabled riders, who use the Segway as a mobility device, would be exempt from certain policy restrictions, provided their use is certified by Metro and a doctor.

Unlike bicycles, Segways will not be allowed on Metrobuses because they can not be stabilized on a bus lift and can’t be secured inside a bus.

The use of Segways was raised during a Town Hall meeting with Metro customers in April.

The policy will be effective in August. Details of the regulations are posted on Metro’s Web site: www.metroopensdoors.com
