Two Metro Stations to Close For Weekend Track Work

Major Maintenance Work Scheduled This Weekend on the Orange Line

This weekend, as part of its Infrastructure Renewal Program to ensure reliable service, Metro will undertake a major track rehabilitation project on the Orange Line which will result in the closure of the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metrorail stations. Customers using the Orange Line this weekend are advised to plan accordingly.

The major track rehabilitation project is as follows:

Vienna/Fairfax-GMU - Dunn Loring-Merrifield - Grout Pad Replacement

When: Friday, July 29, 10 p.m., to Monday, August 1, 5 a.m.

Friday, August 12, 10 p.m., to Monday, August 15, 5 a.m.

On the weekends of July 29 to August 1, and August 12 to 15, Metro personnel will replace the grout pads on the aerial structure between the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metrorail stations on the Orange Line, resulting in the closure of these two stations. This work will require Metro personnel to elevate the pillars along a portion of the aerial structure and insert new grout pads beneath the pillars. Once the new pads are inserted, the pillars will be lowered onto the new pads.

As a result of this safety-sensitive work, the following service patterns will be in effect July 29 to August 1, and August 12 to 15:

The Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metrorail stations will be closed, although the parking lots will remain open.

Orange Line trains that normally serve the Dunn Loring-Merrifield and Vienna/Fairfax-GMU stations will terminate at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station.

Metro will operate free shuttle bus service every five minutes from Vienna/Fairfax-GMU to the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station, with a stop at Dunn Loring-Merrifield.

Passengers will be able to access the free shuttle bus service from the following station bus bay locations:

Vienna/Fairfax-GMU: Nutley Street, bus bay G

Dunn Loring-Merrifield: Gallows Road, bus bay C

West Falls Church/VT-UVA: Haycock Road, bus bay E.

Passengers wishing to bypass the shuttle bus service can travel to the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station for rail service and to park their vehicles. Over 2,000 parking spaces are available at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA station.

On weekends, parking is free at all Metro stations.

To alert customers about this work, Metro will send e-Alerts to customers, hang signs and banners in key stations, place notices on station kiosks, and make train and system announcements. Additional information is available on Metro’s web site at www.metroopensdoors.com.

The Trip Planner, located on Metro’s Web site, will not reflect the impact of this work on its schedules. Customers should allow more time for their trips because of this work. For more information on traveling by Metrobus or Metrorail, customers may call (202) 637-7000 or TTY (202) 638-3780.
