Metrobus 29th Annual Roadeo Winners Named

A Prince George’s County, Md., man, who has been driving Metrobuses for 34 years, captured the top award at the 29th Annual Metrobus Roadeo on Saturday.

For the 17th time, Robert L. Miles of Bowie, Md., who works at the Landover Bus Division in Prince Georges County, Md., won first place. Mr. Miles competed against 19 bus drivers on a course consisting of 11 obstacles that cover every conceivable maneuver that a bus operator would encounter on a street. Mr. Miles demonstrated his excellent driving skills as well as attaining points for personal appearance, smoothness of operation and safety habits.

Second place was captured by Kenneth Lee of Bowie, Md., who also works out of the Landover Bus Division, and third place was taken by Ronald Curry of Clinton, Md., out of the Arlington Bus Division in Arlington, Va.

In another competition, three mechanical teams consisting of three members each had to search for planted defects on a bus and troubleshoot parts, including engine parts, air conditioning units and an air brakes. The team which located the greatest number of defects in the shortest period of time won the competition.

The first place mechanics team, who won for the second consecutive year, was Truc Hoang of Centreville, Va., William Morgan of Bowie, Md., and Locksley McKenzie of Spotsylvania, Va., from the Bladensburg heavy overhaul facility in Washington, D.C.

The second place mechanics team from the Montgomery Garage in Montgomery County, Md., included Leonard Makowski of Beltsville, Md., John Epps, Jr., of Germantown, Md., and Michael Harris of Laurel, Md. The third place mechanics team, a split team from the Arlington, Four Mile Run and Bladensburg Street Garages, consisted of Oscar Hilliard of Upper Marlboro, Md., John Curry of Hyattsville, Md., and Patrick Glenn of Upper Marlboro, Md.

The first place operator and maintenance teams will travel to Anaheim, Calif., to represent Metro at the International Bus Roadeo in May 2006.
