In its continuing efforts to improve information to its bus passengers, Metro plans to award a contract for bus destination sign maintenance. The contractor will provide preventive and corrective maintenance for destination signs on the entire Metrobus fleet.

A review of Metrobus by the American Public Transportation Association, conducted earlier this year, emphasized the importance of properly operating bus destination signs as one way to improve customer communications. Each bus has three destination signs. Currently, approximately 16 percent of buses have at least one destination sign the does not work.

Metro officials believe that hiring a contractor will be the most efficient and cost effective way to maintain the signs.

The Metro Board’s Budget Committee recommended the $680,000 expenditure today. Metro’s Board of Directors is expected to vote on the contract on November 17.
