Man Fatally Injured By Metrobus on Indianhead Highway

A Metrobus fatally injured a man who exited his pickup truck from the shoulder of Indianhead highway into the traffic lane earlier this morning.

At approximately 6:50 a.m., Metrobus number 4410, traveling route number W19, en route to the Southern Avenue Metrorail station, was traveling southbound in the right lane on Indianhead Highway near the intersection of Farmington Road in Prince George’s County, MD. A southbound pickup truck was stopped on the shoulder for an unknown reason. As the driver of the pickup truck exited his vehicle, he opened the door into traffic, and the right side of the Metrobus came in contact with both the pickup truck’s door and the driver, fatally injuring him.

There were four passengers on the Metrobus at the time of the incident. The passengers were moved on another Metrobus to continue onto their final destinations. The bus operator, who has been with Metro since April 2004, was placed on routine leave pending a standard drug and alcohol analysis.

The cause of today’s incident is still under investigation by the Prince George’s County Police Department. No charges have been filed against the Metrobus driver.
