Metro Transit Police arrest two for car jacking

Metro Transit Police have arrested Robert Mills, 19, of Prince George’s County and charged him being a fugitive from justice. He is believed to be one of two individuals who were involved in a 5:55 a.m. car jacking from the Kiss & Ride area of the Deanwood Metrorail station along the Orange Line in the Northeast area of District of Columbia earlier today. Police will seek to extradite him to the District of Columbia to face charges stemming from the car jacking.

The preliminary police investigation indicated that the victim was approached by two strangers who asked him for a ride to the Deanwood Metrorail station. When the vehicle pulled into the station, the two men, armed with a handgun, robbed the man of his vehicle, an early model blue Chevrolet Capris.

Metro Transit Police were notified and immediately broadcast a lookout. Transit Police responded to the scene at which time one of the responding officers spotted the stolen vehicle near the station and attempted to stop it. The police officer followed the vehicle into Seat Pleasant, MD, where the suspects jumped out of the car and took refuge in the neighborhood on 69th Street. The car was recovered on 70th Street.

As police searched the neighborhood, Mills was stopped and questioned. He was later positively identified by witnesses, and arrested at approximately 9 a.m.

A second man, who was arrested by the Seat Pleasant Police for burglary and entering a home on the same street a few hours later, also is being investigated for possible involvement in the car jacking.

"We are pleased that one suspect is in custody. We are looking at a second suspect, who is in custody on another charge, for possible involvement in the car jacking as well," said Metro Transit Police Chief Polly Hanson.

"People who think that they can commit crimes at our Metrorail stations and get away by fleeing into a neighboring jurisdiction are wrong," Chief Hanson said. "We have strong working relationships with local police, and this is an example where joint police work got the job done. It is the type of collaborative policing that we saw come together today with our Metro Transit Police Department, the Prince George’s County Police Department, the Seat Pleasant Police Department, the Metropolitan DC Police Department and the U.S. Park Police that resulted in the arrests of these individuals."

Car jacking is rare at Metro stations. There had been no car jackings in 2005 until today. There were two unsuccessful attempts this year, both at the New Carrollton Metrorail station.
