Gladys Mack Elected Chairperson of Metro’s Board of Directors

Gladys Mack has been elected to serve a year-long term as Chairperson of the Board of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) effective immediately. Mrs. Mack, a Board member representing the District of Columbia, succeeds Dana Kauffman, whose one-year term as chairman ended today. Mr. Kauffman remains on the Board of Directors as a Virginia representative.

Mrs. Mack has served on the WMATA Board from April 1979 to June 1991, and from April 1995 to the present as a representative of the Executive Branch of the District of Columbia. Mrs. Mack has a strong financial background and has served as Chair and member of the Metro’s Board Budget Committee and as a previous Board Chair. She is currently the Chief Operating Officer for the United Planning Organization, the Community Action Agency for the District of Columbia. Mrs. Mack’s tenure in the DC government, she served as Assistant City Administrator for Budget and Resource Development, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Policy and Program Evaluation, and Chair of the DC Board of Parole.

Mrs. Mack is a graduate of Morgan State University. She is a certified Community Action Professional, and has received numerous awards and citations, including the local "Outstanding Women in Transit Award," from the Conference of Minority Transit Officials, and was inducted into the District of Columbia Hall of Fame in 2003.

Also today, Charles Deegan, a Maryland representative of the Board of Directors, was elected First Vice Chairman and Chris Zimmerman, a Virginia representative of the Board, was elected Second Vice Chairman.
