Dan Tangherlini Assumes Role as Metro’s Interim General Manager

Dan Tangherlini was sworn in as Metro’s Interim General Manager at today’s meeting of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Board of Directors. He will be responsible for the operation of the region’s Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess (paratransit) system that carries 1.2 million riders a day.

Mr. Tangherlini, 38, will oversee the activities of nearly 10,000 employees, a $1 billion annual operating budget and a $3.3 billion six-year Capital Improvement Program.

He replaces General Manager and CEO Richard A. White, who last month agreed to a mutual separation with the Board of Directors following nine-and-a-half years of service to the Authority.

"Mr. Tangherlini has a proven record of innovation and community involvement," said Gladys Mack, Metro’s Board Chairperson. "His 10 months of service as an alternate member of Metro’s Board of Directors ensures a level of continuity. He clearly understands the challenges and opportunities that face Metro, our funding partners, and our customers."

"It is truly and honor and privilege to be appointed to this position for what I believe is the best transit agency in the nation," said Mr. Tangherlini. "I want to be sure we are doing everything we can to serve our customers and meet their transportation needs. In addition, Metro has some of the finest professionals in the transit industry and I’m looking forward to working with them."

As the former Director of the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, Mr. Tangherlini was sworn into the Metro Board as an alternate representative for the District of Columbia on March 17, 2005.

Mr. Tangherlini, a resident of the District of Columbia, was appointed Director of the District Department of Transportation in November 2002, having served as acting director of the former division of transportation in the Department of Public Works starting in May 2000. He served as chief financial officer of the Metropolitan Police Department from November 1998 to May 2000.

In the executive office of the mayor, Mr. Tangherlini was the leader of the short-term action team from January to April 1999 that developed high-visibility short-term initiatives for District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams. He also served as the Metropolitan Police Department deputy chief financial officer from March to November, 1998.

Before joining the District Government, Mr. Tangherlini was a senior program analyst in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation where he helped negotiate a landmark Amtrak labor settlement and worked on the development of innovative approaches to infrastructure finance. He also worked in the Office of Management and Budget from 1991 to 1997, when he served as a special assistant, a program examiner and a budget preparation specialist.

Mr. Tangherlini has a B.A. and M.P.P. from the University of Chicago and an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
