Transferring paper farecards to SmarTrip® cards gets easier

Switching from paper farecards to plastic SmarTrip® cards just got easier for Metro riders with the elimination of the $7 maximum value trade-in limit.

Metro riders can now transfer the value of paper farecards—of any value, new or used—to their SmarTrip® cards. Previously, paper farecards had to be $7 or less or never used, to be transferred to SmarTrip®.

The elimination of the $7 limit makes the switch from paper farecards to reusable, plastic SmarTrip® cards easier for Metro customers. Making it easier for Metro riders to trade in their paper farecards is another example of how Metro is listening and responding to its riders.

SmarTrip® cards can hold up to $300 in value. The plastic farecards can be used on both Metrorail and Metrobus, and is the only method of payment accepted in Metro-operated parking facilities.
