Metro’s Board Gives Preliminary Approval To Execute An Agreement with Fairfax County for Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail Station Enhancements

Metro’s Board Planning and Development Committee today gave preliminary approval to negotiate and execute lease agreements pertaining to proposed enhancements at the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station to support the MetroWest development project.

The Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station on the Orange Line has direct access to I-66, the highest number of park and ride spaces of all Metrorail stations, and receives numerous feeder buses from four different transit providers.

As a result of MetroWest development project and increased demand at the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU station, Fairfax County asked Metro to conduct a study of the station last year in terms of facilities and access. After a complete review, Metro developed a station access program of proposed capital projects for enhanced access, bus facilities and parking at the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU station. The station access program has three primary projects:

New Stairwell Within The Station

As a result of Metro moving to eight-car trains and with future development at the station, Metro and Fairfax County propose the addition of a new stairwell around the existing elevator and alongside the outbound escalator.

New Parking Structure

With the lease on a nearby 680 parking space temporary lot set to expire at the end of the year, and with land needed for the MetroWest project, Metro and Fairfax County propose a new third parking structure to accommodate up to 1,300 vehicles.

Additional Station Improvements

The MetroWest development will also require changes to the Vienna station’s southside bus facility and access roads and additional improvements. These enhancements will be covered by the MetroWest development.
