Man dies after being struck by Metrobus

A Metrobus that was preparing for its first trip of the morning on the W-19 line struck and killed a pedestrian who was walking across the southbound lanes of Maryland Route 210 in Charles County, Md., this morning. Only the bus driver was aboard bus number 4407, and she was not injured in the 4:37 a.m. accident.

The W-19 is known as the Indian Head Express Line, and it runs out of the Southern Avenue Bus Division, located in Temple Hills, Md.

The female bus operator, age 37, has been working for Metro since December 2005. She was traveling southbound on the 5400 block of Indian Head Highway in the right lane and was merging into the second lane to avoid colliding with several deer in the roadway when a male pedestrian walked from the grass median into the travel lane and was struck by the left front corner of the bus.

The last time there was a pedestrian fatality involving a Metrobus was November 2005.

Maryland State Police are the primary police investigators. No charges have been filed against the bus operator at this time.
